February was full of friendship and kindness. The children enjoyed exchanging Valentine cards with one another. The teachers taught lessons on cultural awareness and friendship. The children listened and danced to different songs from the continent of Asia including music from China, India, Japan, Korea, and Asian Island countries. Teachers introduced games, cultural foods, clothing and books. The top book for the month is, Little Blue and Little Yellow, by Leo Lionni. The story is about two best friends. One day they can’t find each other, when they finally do, they give each other such a big hug then they turn green!
The children learned about Katsushika Hokusai who was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period. The teachers and students also had discussions and lessons on President George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. In cooking, the students carried on the theme by creating friendship inspired recipes, friendship trail mix and friendship salads.
